HP To Retire HP Scan and Capture
HP has announced plans to retire the HP Scan and Capture app for Windows from the Microsoft Store and discontinue any further app updates as of May 1, 2024.
HP Scan and Capture is a standalone HP scanning utility which is compatible with many HP scan-capable devices (ex: HP OfficeJet & HP OfficeJet Pro multi-function printers). Unlike the scan feature in HP Smart which requires signing into an HP account, HP Scan and Capture is a modern, straight-forward, easy to use scanning application that doesn’t require an HP account or HP cloud services.
For users of older HP scan-capable devices, HP Scan and Capture is one of two workarounds to scanning without the HP Solution Center which ceased working in 2021 when Adobe Flash Player reached EOL.
There is a legacy HP Scan utility available in the full HP software and driver package. You’ll need to download and install the HP Easy Smart Printer Setup Software (software package name may vary depending on your HP device) available on the HP website. It’s not available when you install HP Smart.
During installation of the HP Easy Smart Printer Setup Software, be sure to choose the Full Software and Drivers option instead of HP Smart (Recommended).
Some caveats:
The HP Easy Smart Printer Setup Software will make you jump through quite a few hoops just to get the software installed
Be sure to read all the privacy notices and optional offerings before clicking on anything
The legacy HP Scan utility will open in a small window that cannot be resized nor does it scale to your display resolution which may make it difficult to use
Though HP will retire the HP Scan and Capture app as of May 1st, the app may continue to work for some time before it reaches EOL. Use this opportunity to consider and test alternatives (ex: Windows Fax and Scan) so you’re not left scrambling to find an alternative solution.
