Making The Leap To The Asus RT-AX92U Router
Finding a reliable router can be quite a challenge. After many years using Netgear routers, I decided to make a switch as Netgear has fallen short over the years and a lot has to do with the lack of quality control and testing of their firmware. I tried moving into the small business router arena with Cisco and the Cisco RV260W Small Business Router but that too fell short with performance, stability and reliability issues which forced me back to the drawing board.
I eventually found myself focusing on Asus and their line of routers. I ultimately decided to take the leap and give the Asus RT-AX92U Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router a chance and now after almost two years in use, I’m glad I made the switch.
The router has a solid feature set and performs extremely well. I haven’t had any connectivity issues, disconnects, sporadic reboots and/or reliability issues since deploying it. The router is easy to configure and offers all the core features and functionality available in most routers on the market and certainly meets my operational needs.
There have been numerous firmware updates since I’ve deployed the router and I’ve upgraded to each firmware version without any significant issues which is incredible given my experience dealing with Netgear routers and their respective firmware. It’s a joy having a firmware upgrade do what it is supposed to do instead of breaking functionality and causing instability and havoc.
The Asus RT-AX92U router comes in a small form factor when compared to most other routers (even the AC power block is small) and is capable of being used as part of a mesh system. The router can be purchased as a single unit or in a two pack to create the mesh system (or be used in conjunction with another compatible Asus mesh router). I didn’t need a mesh system, so I opted to go with a single unit.
The router offers strong Internet security features including AiProtection Pro powered by Trend Micro which helps protect personal data and devices connected to the Internet against Internet intrusions and attacks. Using AiProtection Pro does require sending certain information to Trend Micro’s servers in order to provide the Internet security protection afforded by this security feature (ex: identifying and blocking access to malicious websites requires sending certain information to Trend Micro’s database servers to compare against a known list of malicious sites). This may raise a privacy concern for some. While it’s not uncommon for commercial Internet security products to do the same, commercial products typically come with a Service Level Agreement (SLA) and flexibility to address compliance requirements. The security features offered by Trend Micro with this router are subject to Trend Micro’s license agreement rather than a commercial Service Level Agreement.
You can easily enable and/or disable AiProtection Pro from the router’s dashboard. To enable protection, you do need to agree to Trend Micro’s license agreement. I should also note that in addition to AiProtection Pro, other features like the Traffic Analyzer, Apps Analyzer and Adaptive QoS/Game Boost features are also subject to Trend Micro’s license agreement. While the features are included at no additional cost with the Asus router, you must agree to Trend Micro’s license agreement to utilize these features. That said, the router will work fine without enabling any of these additional Trend Micro features if you choose not to use them. Whether you choose to use these features or not is a personal choice.
While this router is a couple years old now, it’s stable, reliable and dependable!
